Awards for Local Sporting Heroes

Labour AM for the Vale of Clwyd Ann Jones has added her congratulations to news that three individuals from Denbighshire have been honoured at the National Sports Awards, held at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff on Wednesday 14th November.

Aaron Evans won the Youth Coach of the Year Award. Aaron is a former Everton FC Disability Team player who now also coaches youngsters as part of the Dragon Sports programme.

Mike Hayes won the Coach to Disabled Sports People of the Year. Mike coaches the wheelchair basketball team, Rhyl Raptors. He is a former Paralympic athlete who competed at the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona and is a world record breaker in discus and pentathlon.

Bruce Carlyle won the Lifetime Achievement honour. Bruce is a golfing stalwart with a strong connection with Denbigh Golf Club.

Ann Jones said:

“All three of the winners, Aaron, Mike and Bruce have given so much to grassroots sports; I’m pleased their commitment and perseverance has been recognised at a national level.

“Because sport matters to us all and it contributes enormously in engaging people of all ages and abilities, supporting a diverse community and in encouraging positive character-building it’s so important we praise those who make a positive community contribution.”
