“Put children’s health before free school ideology” says AM
Labour AM for the Vale of Clwyd, Ann Jones, today launched an attack on declining nutritional standards in schools in England, comparing it with the Welsh Government’s commitment to maintaining healthy school lunches for all Welsh children.
Ms Jones said: “We know how important it is to ensure that the food children eat at school is nutritious and forms part of a balanced diet no matter what type of school they attend. We have worked hard in Wales to ensure this happens – to tackle childhood obesity which remains stubbornly high.
“The UK Government should put children’s health before free school ideology and frankly accept that the whole free schools project is in a complete mess.”
Professor Terrance Stephenson, Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the professional body that represents working doctors in the UK has warned that children’s health was being put at risk in England because Academies and Free Schools are being allowed to opt out of serving healthy menus.
