Local AM seeks urgent reassurances on mental health care at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd
Vale of Clwyd AM, Ann Jones, has sought urgent reassurances from the Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board (BCUHB) that there is a continuity of care for patients in light of the temporary closure of the Tawel Fan ward in the Ablett Unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
The Tawel Fan has been temporarily shut by BCUHB pending an investigation by the board, North Wales Police and others into patient safety and care. Several staff have been removed from clinical duties and the remainder will be redeployed to support patients in other clinical areas. In a letter to Mrs Jones, acting Chief Executive, Geoff Lang, confirmed that patients would use services at the Bryn Hesketh unit in Colwyn Bay.
Mrs Jones said: “The closure of the Tawel Fan ward will be of great concern to patients and their families. Although the health board has acted quickly and appropriately, I am in need of reassurances that patients will not suffer poorer care due to the closure of the ward.
“I have asked the health board to confirm a timetable of when they expect for the ward to be re-opened to patients. I also look forward to seeing the conclusions of the health board’s review of the closure and how they will make sure that this will never happen again.
